Food Review: evol. Truffle Parmesan Mac and Cheese

Millennials in The Frozen Food Aisle

This is one those frozen food items that you may have walked passed numerous of times without a second thought. Or you may have even stopped to read the box and see what it’s all about. Doesn’t Truffle Parmesan Mac and Cheese sound like something you need to experience? Problem is it’s not coming to you freshly made at your favorite restaurant; it’s in the frozen food aisle for god’s sake. Which made me a little reluctant to try it out. We all know the frozen food aisles are filled with a few hits and a whole lot of misses. This is where all the unhealthy, low quality quick meals come to hang out for god knows how long.

Everyone’s a Foodie

Have you noticed that everyone is either health conscious, a foodie or swear they’re professional chefs? Then there’s the growing percentage of people that are both. They want as little ingredients as possible and high nutritional values without losing the “BIG TASTE”- a phrase that can found on a box of .evol foods. But do they deliver?

First let me tell you what’s in evol. Truffle Parmesan Mac & Cheese.

There are two methods of cooking this stuff, in the microwave or in the oven. I chose the oven because; I’d rather wait the 40 minutes and get the best results.

Honestly, the first bite was interesting and I wasn’t sure if I would rate this product so high. I couldn’t really figure the flavor out at first. However, when I did, I was very pleased. The truffles they promise to be 100% legit aren’t shy and yet it’s not an overpowering taste. I have to say the flavors are very balanced; it’s creamy, not super cheesy, and well seasoned. Keep in mind this is a frozen food item. The fact that there’s quality and flavor in this box earned evol. major point. This mac and cheese is the kind that you use when you’ve lied and told someone you can cook and they force you prove it. Throw this in the oven and serve it likes it’s yours.

Where it does lose points is the salt content. Think about the recommended daily salt intake being 2,300 mg at most and even less for those with health issues. For a 8oz of mac and cheese to carry 430mg of salt is a bit much. Especially, if you plan on eating this along with a protein like chicken or steak (the product itself is vegetarian). Then again I can barely claim the “clean-eating” life. I would’ve gladly eaten a second one without any hesitation.

Another plus is the 12g of protein, that’s more than you’d get per serving from a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.
