Reading October 2015’s Nylon IT Girl Resumes I came across Michaela Deprince’s story. She lost both parent during Sierra Leone’s civil war which lead to her becoming an orphan. One day Michaela discovered a magazine with a ballerina on the cover by the gate of her orphanage. Something stuck, she then at young age of only 4 decided that was her destiny.

Michaela lost both parents, was left at an orphanage only to taunted for having vitiligo. Although it took going through something unimaginable to most to discover something so great, it lead to many accomplishments. From dancing a solo from swan lake to dancing at the American Ballet Theatre and MGM buying the rights to her autobiography, Taking Flight: From Orphan to Star Ballerina. Michaela proves that through hard times you can find a big part of yourself. Sometimes it’s the little things like finding a photograph of a ballerina. To anyone else it might of just been a photo. But, to her it was more, maybe it was a gut feeling that it wasn’t a coincidence.

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”- Steve Jobs
